When you own or manage a company, remember that once you adopt any policy as a part of your approval process, you must do the same things, run the same checks etc. on EVERY applicant. Not to, might be considered a form of discrimination.

Your applicant could have convictions in other states that go undisclosed. This is why a search of this scope is your best defense.
For the following 4 states, (AL, NM, ND, SD) you will need to order a Statewide Criminal Background Check. We recommend that you also run a National Criminal Background Check because many people are transient and may have criminal records in other states. For the state of CA, we recommend you include the Statewide Criminal Background Check and\or the individual County Criminal Background Check where they have resided. This is because only some counties are included in the National Criminal Background Check.
The following states require additional searches in order to do your 'best available' to check all the criminal records in the US.
The State of South Dakota requires a Statewide Search as this state is not included in the National Criminal Search.
The States of California, New Mexico, North Dakota, and South Dakota may contain some records in the National Criminal Background Check but more detailed records are available in the Statewide Criminal Background Search.
The State of California does not have all their records in the National Criminal Background Search or Statewide Criminal Background Search. All county records are available in the County Criminal Search only. We recommend that you do all 3 criminal searches for California as per below:
- National Criminal Background Check: To check for criminal records for 42 states in the US provided in one report.
- Statewide Criminal Background Check: To check for criminal records with details which are only available at the state level.
- County Criminal Background Search: To check for criminal records that are not included in the National Criminal Background Check or Statewide Criminal Background Check and are only available by 'Specific County'. We recommend that you do a County Criminal Background Check for the specific county where the applicant currently resides.
The following 8 states DO NOT report their criminal records nationally or by state.
For these states we recommend that you do a National Criminal Background Check for records in other states that are reported and in the county(s) they do\have resided in this particular state or any of the states on this list.

County Criminal Background Check: To check for criminal records that are not included in the National Criminal Background Check or Statewide Criminal Background Check and are only available by 'Specific County'. We recommend that you do a County Criminal Search for the county where they currently reside.
OTHER NAMES USED
It is important to run a criminal search on all Aliases, AKA, or other known names the person has used.
The applicant may provide other names they have used on their application for employment, rental, or lease.
You can also find other names they have used in association with their SSN on your Nationwide Criminal Report.
Each different name requires a separate order submission and search to be performed. This is necessary because the searches are on NAME + DOB. It is possible that a person could have criminal records on a name they have used in the past and putting your family, your home and your property at risk by not doing your best available to find this information.
Although this may cost you a little more up front, it will help you ensure that you are not placing criminals in your home, property, or business and can potentially save you a lot of money and grief in the end.
